The Designated Person has a key role in the development and implementation of the safety management system within a shipping company with a view to ensuring safety at sea, prevention of human injury or loss life, and avoidance of damage to the environment, in particular to the marine environment and to property.
Employers are to designate an employee to have day-to-day responsibility for the Injury Management System. This role is referred to as the Injury Management Coordinator. Typically in a small business the owner would fill this role. A medium-sized business may offer the role on a part or full-time basis and a large business may appoint a number of Injury Management Coordinators across multiple sites.
